Event description

What is Hoarding?

According to The American Psychiatric Association, Hoarding occurs when an individual has a persistent difficulty getting rid of or parting with possessions, leading to clutter that disrupts their ability to use their living or work spaces. Studies show that compulsive hoarding affects up to 6 percent of the population, or 19 million Americans, and has been found to run in families (The Washington Post, 2016).

On behalf of Mental Health America of Greater Dallas, we are excited to present you the 9th Annual Southwest Conference on Hoarding. This conference is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to gain knowledge about the Hoarding Disorder, teach the community how to effectively approach hoarding, and an opportunity to network and learn about the resources associated to Hoarding available in the DFW Metroplex.

This year our conference will explore hoarding through a multidisciplinary approach. We are anticipating 200+ attendees, ranging from professionals such as social workers, caseworkers, psychiatrists, counselors, code enforcement, law enforcement, first responders, consumers, and their family members.

6.25 CEU's available: SW, LPC, CE

Participants will learn:

  • Identification of cluttering and hoarding behaviors in individuals
  • Various perspectives of multiple professionals in response to hoarding
  • An understanding of the psychological components of the hoarding disorder
  • Ethical considerations in treating hoarding behavior
