Bloomington-Normal ACT-SO Competition

**Please show your support for our community youth by purchasing a table for your organization and/or eight (8) future leaders to attend the 2019 Bloomington-Normal NAACP ACT-SO Awards Ceremony.**

The Bloomington-Normal Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) Program is a nonprofit academic initiative sponsored by the Bloomington-Normal Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The program is 40 years old and was founded by renowned author, journalist, and humanitarian, the late Vernon Jarrett. Our local program provides African-American students in the Bloomington-Normal area, grades 9-12, the opportunity to explore and challenge their interest and talent in 5 categories: STEM, Humanities, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Culinary Arts, and Business. The students experience a 7 month, intensive, academic enrichment program that provides individual mentors and enrichment activities. The students then compete locally for scholarships. Gold medalists in each category, (32 total categories) are automatically entered into the national competition, where they compete against hundreds of students from across the United States for national scholarships and awards. The Bloomington-Normal ACT-SO program covers expenses for each student that participates in the national competition.

Please help us to celebrate the accomplishments of our local students’ hard work and passion for their talents by contributing financially. All donations are tax deductible. Your contribution will allow the dreams of the young people in our program, to come alive. It will also show your commitment to the community and philanthropic efforts as well.

If you have any questions or for further information, please contact us at act-so@bnact-so.org. Please help inspire these talented youth by contributing to this cause. Help us to make a difference and encourage the positive endeavors of these young scholars. They are truly worthy of your contribution.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN ACT-SO?

ACT-SO was developed to enhance and showcase the academic and artistic achievement of African-American high school students just as we do their athletic achievements. Since 1978, the NAACP ACT-SO has:

• Challenged students to excel and consistently put a spotlight on their efforts and successes;
• Raised the standard of excellence and expectation among our youth;
• Promoted a climate of academic and artistic development; and
• Mobilized the adult community to serve as mentors and coaches for students in the areas of the STEM, humanities, business, performing, visual, and culinary arts.

ACT-SO is intended to be a learning experience, first and foremost. The focus of a viable and effective local ACT-SO program is on enrichment and mentorship. Students work with ACT-SO mentors who help them develop projects throughout the year. ACT-SO programs also provide ACT-SO students with enrichment opportunities, such as workshops, tutorials, and field trips.

The benefits ACT-SO Olympians receive from the enrichment and mentorship components include substantial assistance toward the development of their ACT-SO projects and valuable tools to assist them throughout their education.

The competition serves to showcase the hard work students have put in all year long. Students receive medals and prizes provided by the local and regional sponsors and contributors. ACT-SO Olympians who receive gold medals on the local level then compete at the national competition where they receive scholarships and other rewards provided by national sponsors.
