Private, public, or somewhere in between? Social media for partners of heads of mission

About this event

I want to post some political statements against Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Is there a reason I shouldn’t make posts like these?
Does the FDFA expect me to repost things from the Embassy website?
I have very different friend groups, and I post a lot of things on Facebook – pictures from events, nights out with friends, my kids’ birthday parties, the occasional joke, etc. I don’t want to have to hide different sides of myself, but I am worried I might do something wrong, maybe without even knowing it. Are there rules about what I should / should not post online?

Navigating social media can be challenging, and even more so when you are the partner or spouse of a Head of Mission. PHoMs exist right on the edge between being public people and private citizens – but where is the line, and how can we walk that line successfully? How can we balance our own interests, professions, and characters on social media with our partners’ more public personas?

This year, we have invited internal experts from FDFA Communications and Presence Switzerland to discuss this challenging area with us, looking specifically at the role of the partner of head of mission. We will delve into the nuances and potential pitfalls, discuss some guiding principles PHoMs can use to approach these questions, and give practical tips, with time for discussion and your questions. Participants will also have time to catch up and exchange experience with peers and colleagues informally at the end of the workshop.

This course will be held online to allow attendance from all around the world.

Who should attend this course?

All accompanying partners/spouses who currently are (or expect to soon become) the partner of a Head of Mission, partner of a Consul General, or partner of a Head of a Cooperation office are warmly invited to attend the course. If you are not sure if this course is for you, contact us at president@acet-veeda.ch

This course is organized by ACET-VEEDA, and is open to all eligible FDFA partners and spouses.
