Description

2019 is the Year of the Womxn at Zeitgeist, and we are excited to announce that as part of our year of celebrating womxn, our keynote address at the 8th Annual Mayor's Bike Ride & Luncheon will be Melody Hoffman! Dr. Hoffman will speak about the role of the bicycle in women's rights movements and how today, bicycle amenities can dovetail with rising economic and racial inequities in urban spaces. Dr. Hoffmann will also experience and examine local Duluth bicycle amenities and talk about the future of bicycling in Duluth through a social equity lens.

Dr. Melody Hoffmann is an enthusiastic urban bicyclist and author of Bike Lanes are White Lanes, a book about how bicycle advocacy can intertwine with gentrification and systemic racism. Her academic work is supported by local bicycle and pedestrian advocacy work in the Twin Cities. Dr. Hoffmann teaches communication studies at Anoka-Ramsey Community College. She is also the co-producer of the podcast Feminist Killjoys, PhD. Dr. Hoffmann received her doctoral degree in 2013 from the University of Minnesota.

Bike with the keynote speaker and the mayors of Superior and Duluth in the annual Mayor's Bike Ride to the luncheon! Meet at City Hall at 11:45am for a noon departure. Lunch will be from OMC Smokehouse and include vegetarian sloppy joes or smoked pulled chicken, salad, and roasted bacon and bleu cheese potato salad. All of these items are gluten-free and there will be gluten-free buns available. Gluten-free food is prepared in the same cooking space as non-gluten-free items.

This event is part of Zeitgeist Community's Bus Bike Walk Duluth, which is a month-long series of community events that celebrates, educates and encourages people-powered modes of getting around – for work, errands, recreation, shopping, and school.
