Dear Friend,

The OYLA Advisory Council members are proud to announce the presentation of the 7th Annual Living Above the Influence Youth Leadership Conference.

This summit will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. on the campus of Gateway Community College, located at 108 N 40th Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85034. This exciting event will bring together 250 males of color in grades 7th-12th from across the state of Arizona.

During the conference the young men will hear from civic, government, and business leaders along with participating in interactive workshops presented by national and local experts on the topics of:

The conference will also present the Charles Marshall III Essay Contest that awards scholarships to a winning Junior High and High School youth.In addition, they will also be able to explore educational enrichment opportunities at the lunch Academic Resource Fair, that will also include a DJ from local radio station, special guest entertainment, and prizes all while enjoying lunch with peers and mentors.

Dr. Will Moreland2019 LATI Keynote Speaker

The keynote speaker for the 2019 LATI is Dr. Will Moreland. Dr. Will is a Military Veteran and President of Will Moreland International, LLC, a leading training and consulting company dedicated to helping individuals and organizations maximize their potential.

History of Living Above the Influence:

Founded in 2011, the LATI Youth Summit is now identified as a supportive event of the national My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Alliance Initiative. It has provided service and educational enrichments to over 1100 males of color from throughout the greater metro Phoenix area, man who have gone on to pursue higher education and lead positive and productive lives.

Enrollment to this powerful event is FREE for the first 100 youth, and spaces are limited to 250. To nominate a youth, to enroll, or for sponsorship opportunities, please visit www.oylapresents.com or www.oyla.org.

Who can attend the conference?   
Males 7th-12th grades and their parents

How much is the event?      
Free for the first 100 youth registrations; $25.00 fee afterwards. Parent registrations: $15. Space is limited to 250 youth and 100 parents.

What is the dress code for the conference?
No hats, graphic tees, jeans with holes. No headphones. Cell phones are permitted but will be asked to be put away out of respect for presenters

Where will it take place?
On the campus of Gateway Community College, located at 108 N 40th Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85034

How do you register?    
Visit www.oylapresents.com. Event is free to the first 100 participants; $25 for subsequent participants

Will you allow refunds? If yes, will you allow up to 7 days before the event or 1 day before the event?

YES, Refunds 48 hours prior to the event. Registration fee can fully refunded or transferred to a deserving youth as donation or to OYLA general programs. Must be expressed in writing 48 hours before event to oyla3000@gmail.com

CONTEST GUIDELINES & OVERVIEW 

ELIGIBILITY

Must be registered and attend the 2019 LATI conference 

AWARDS

Two categories – Junior High (7th -8th High School (9th-12th)
$100 per winning essay 

APPLICATION

  • Interested youth must submit an essay of 25O words or less.

  • Topic Question:Typed on Word document - 12 Font size - Times New Roman

    • “Research and identify one societal issue that effects minority youth and explain how would you can resolve it?”

  • Paper labeled in top right corner with:

All information received is considered confidential.

Scoring will be based on a rubric. Four is the highest score an essay can receive from one reader. Since the essay will be read by four readers, the maximum score an essay can receive is 16.

PAYMENT OF SCHOLARSHIP

Student will be recognized at the 2019 LATI Conference. Winners will be required later to submit an OYLA Scholarship Requisition form provided and proof of 2019 Fall enrollment in an educational institution and OYLA will release payment.
