About EL GUSTO:
In 2003, film director Safinez Bousbia stumbled upon the inspirational story of El Gusto, a group of Jewish and Muslim artists separated by war in Algeria more than 50 years ago, but brought together by a shared passion for Chaâbi – a musical blend of Berber, Andalusian, and Flamenco-influenced sounds meaning “of the people.” Called “The Buena Vista Social Club of Algiers,” the 20-piece El Gusto orchestra stars in Bousbia’s documentary, chronicling the transcendent power of music.
About the Performer:
Atlas Soul is an award-winning band based in Boston performing original music that celebrates and bridges Afro-Mediterranean melodies & grooves with Jazz and Funk, naturally creating metisse genres of music one could described as Maghrebi-Funk, Rock’n Raï, Chaabi-Jazz or Afro-Mediterranean! "Atlas Soul's blend of jazz, funk and Middle-Eastern/Arabic grooves is a fascinating sonic stew that will catch any listener's ear. This is their second appearance on our CD's compilation. We like'em, and you will too". Global Rhythm Magazine - See more at: http://www.atlas-soul.com .
About the Boston Muslim Film Festival
The American Islamic Congress is hosting its 8th Annual Boston Muslim Film Festival from March 25th to April 11th. Our festival provides a fresh perspective into the complexity of the Muslim Community. Open dialogue on unspoken issues and tackling stereotypes surrounding the Muslim Identity is the aim for the series of films AIC has selected this year. The movies will address social issues such as American Muslim Identity, sexual harassment, Interfaith collaborations, revolutions, genocide, generation gaps, censorship, and many more—visually complementing the striking theme of this year’s film festival—“Contrast in Depth.”
This program is funded in part by MassHumanities. Thank you.
