Event description

Description

Glenbard Township High School District's seventh annual 87 Fest “A Forest of Ideas” is at Morton Arboretum in Lisle, IL on Wednesday, April 17th, 2019. This event is a celebration of teachers’ collaborations with instructional coaches across the district.

In addition to the sharing of teachers' innovations and a collaborative activity each session will feature a keynote from Dr. Art Markman. Dr. Art Markman is the Anabel Irion Worsham Centennial Professor of Psychology and Marketing at the University of Texas at Austin and Founding Director of the Program in the Human Dimensions of Organizations.

After receiving a B.S. in Cognitive Science from Brown University in 1988, Art went on to graduate school in the Psychology Department at the University of Illinois, where he received his PhD in 1992. He then spent five years as an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at Columbia University.

Art brings insights from cognitive science to a broader audience through his blogs at Psychology Today and Fast Company and books including Smart Thinking, Smart Change, and Brain Briefs. Additionally, he hosts a radio show and podcast called Two Guys on Your Head produced at Austin’s NPR station, WKUT. You can get more information about his work at smartthinkingbook.com.

THERE ARE TWO IDENTICAL SESSIONS: WEDNESDAY MORNING FROM 7:45-11:00 (breakfast provided) and WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON FROM 11:15-2:30 (lunch provided).

THIS YEAR WE ARE ALSO OFFERING A FULL DAY OPTION FOR OUT-OF-DISTRICT ATTENDEES. THIS INCLUDES THE MORNING 87 FEST PRESENTATION AND A "DESIGNING FOR PLAYFUL LEARNING" WORKSHOP IN THE AFTERNOON. In a world that increasingly values innovation, it is more important than ever for students to gain competency in creative design and problem-solving. Design thinking is an approach to solving open-ended problems that puts the end user at the center, provides opportunities for playful exploration of ideas, and involves cycles of idea-generation, testing, and feedback. In this workshop, we draw from design thinking and playful learning principles but focus on the qualities of a mindset that supports innovative design, describing a set of competencies that make up this mindset. Participants will practice using these competencies in a hands-on activity that models how a design mindset can be applied to teaching and learning, guided by the Design Mindset Cards developed by InGlobal Learning Design. The Design Mindset Cards will be available for purchase during the afternoon workshop for $25 (cash only please).

The Arb has limited capacity, so the space allocated for non-Glenbard participants are first come first serve. We have more open spots in the AM session. The full program will be shared here asap as a PDF.

There is a 1/2 dayregistration fee of $50 for non-Glenbard employees (which includes breakfast or lunch). There is also a full day option for $100 which includes both breakfast and lunch, the morning 87 Fest session and the "Playful Learning Workshop" in the afternoon.

PLEASE NOTE - Tickets are non-refundable, however they are transferable.

If you have any additional questions please contact Jamie Wilson (Jamie_Wilson@glenbard.org) in Glenbard’s office of Teaching & Learning.
