Description

80 X 50: Mapping Pathways to a Low Carbon NYC

Join Green Light New York and our partners for an engaged discussion of the building sector's role in NYC's comprehensive 80 X 50 report- a road map to dramatically reducing the carbon footprint of New York City.

In December of 2013, the City of New York published a long-awaited study that mapped a pathway to reduce the city’s carbon footprint 80% by 2050 (compared to a 2005 baseline). The report identifies and analyzes the four highest impact sectors: energy supply, transportation, solid waste and buildings; and outlines the most cost effective means available in each sector to reach the 80 X 50 target. Not surprisingly, buildings play a major role in the report- accounting for more than 60% of the carbon footprint reductions identified.

Join us the morning of March 25th to discuss the building sector portion of the report, including the challenges ahead and the measures necessary to surmount them. The audience will benefit from a presentation of the findings of the report by one of the primary authors, followed by a moderated discussion among some of the most highly regarded professionals in the field.

The 80 X 50 study includes a significant focus on the residential sector, which makes up 70% of the square footage of the city and outlines the continued need for education and technical assistance within the design, construction and real estate communities. As noted by the authors, accelerating action in the near term is critical to meeting an aggressive goal like 80 X 50. Join us as we map out the path to achieving this important milestone.
