Event description

Description

This workshop is built for short story writers and novelists. The novelist and memoirist Janet Burroway states in her book Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft, “The purpose of all the arts, including literature, is to quell boredom.” We seek literature not to edify or improve ourselves but to engage our imagination and emotions, to expand our empathy—our desire to feel.

In this mixed-level class, we’ll grapple with how writers use the formal elements of fiction to compel their readers’ emotional investment in their work. To help students craft stories that will “quell boredom,” we’ll read a range of fiction, focusing on narrative voice, pacing, tone, action, and use of plot. In both the published examples and students’ work, we’ll focus on how these elements create the kind of stakes that engage readers, and how the elements create the urgency, vitality, and energy that sustain interest. We’ll look at how the opening pages establish these stakes as well as how various details of a narrative generate vitality.

Students will have an opportunity to present their work twice to be workshopped. Each submitted manuscript will received typed, formal feedback from both the instructor and classmates. Students’ participation in every area of the class is essential.

NOTE: Class readings will combine both fiction and craft essays. Both will be distributed, either in class or through email scans. No book purchase is necessary.
