Event description

Description

This advanced workshop is designed to make you a better writer, reader, and editor of fiction. We want you to come away from this course able to see more deeply and fundamentally into yours, as well as others’ work, and we want to expose you to a wide range of what is possible in the form. This course is geared for writers with a regular creative writing practice. If you have mastered the essential elements of craft and are looking for a rigorous workshop ready to offer in-depth constructive criticism on your works in progress, this is the class for you.

The instructor, Steve Adams, has selected one theory book (though he will recommend others), a number of individual short stories, and a novel excerpt for the workshop to work through and discuss in class. But the primary focus will be to read and respond to the stories you and your peers submit to the workshop. Many writers learn as much, if not more, about how to rewrite their own work by editing others than they learn from feedback to their own writing, so we’ll take this part very seriously. Students will have an opportunity to present their work twice to be workshopped. Each submitted manuscript will receive typed, formal feedback from both the instructor and classmates. Students’ participation in every area of the class is essential. At the end of the workshop you will have gained fresh perspective on your hard-won work and a clear direction as far as getting your writing ready to submit for publication.

NOTE: Students are required to purchase The Writer's Field Guide to the Craft of Fiction by Michael Noll. Assorted short stories/excerpts will also be provided by the instructor via email.

  • Class size limited to 8 writers

His fiction has been nominated for Pushcart Prizes, anthologized in Sudden Fiction (Continued), and published in Glimmer Train, The Missouri Review, Chicago Review, and elsewhere.
