Scope & Importance of General Practice Summit 2018 Conference

The conference will be organized to bring together practitioners, administrators, policy makers, politicians and researchers within the field of general practice and primary health care. Conference themes will focus on issues related with Innovation, Sustainability, Equity, Critical thinking and Uncertainty. Internationally there is increasing recognition of the importance of the General practice system for improving health outcomes and managing costs. GPs are responsible for recognising, diagnosing and, where appropriate, providing health care education, treatment or referrals to specialists. GPs provide healthcare support for patients of any age, gender and ethnicity. The most important aspect to GPs is the administering of a patient’s desired or required health outcome. This involves building long-term and lasting relationships with your patients as you act in turn as a doctor, counsellor and health promoter and educator on an individual and group basis. As well, better General practice and primary care can also prevent inappropriate and unnecessary use of residential care services.

Patients living in rural areas often have limited or no access to specialists or medical services; as a result, a GP may find that their responsibilities extend beyond what they might be in a more metropolitan area. This can extend to private hospital care, after-hours services, birth assistance and other clinical procedures. A rural GP may also encounter more diversity in their patient population, including more Indigenous people.

Why Vancouver?

Vancouver is consistently named as one of the top five worldwide cities for liveability and quality of life, and the Economist Intelligence Unit acknowledged it as the first city ranked among the top-ten of the world's most well-living cities for five consecutive years Vancouver has hosted many international conferences and events, including the Expo 86, 2010 Winter Paralympics and UN habitat 1. As the most populous city in the province, the 2016 census recorded 631,486 people in the city, up from 603,502 in 2011. The Greater Vancouver area had a population of 2,463,431 in 2016, making it the third-largest metropolitan area in Canada. Vancouver has the highest population density in Canada with over 5,400 people per square kilometre Vancouver is also one of the wettest Canadian cities. However, precipitation varies throughout the metropolitan area. With over 250,000 residents, Vancouver is the fourth most densely populated city in North America behind New York City, San Francisco, and Mexico City according to the 2011 census. Vancouver is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities in Canada according to that census; 52% of its residents have a first language other than English. With its scenic views, mild climate, and friendly people, Vancouver is known around the world as both a popular tourist attraction and one of the best places to live.

Members Associated with General Practice and Women's Healthcare:

Important pressures are the integration of Community Care and General Practice or in other words the connection between Primary care and General practice for the individual. The difficulty for local authorities is to adapt their care system to the increased needs of the individuals living within their neighbourhoods. These needs have not only increased in volume but also in complexity. An adequate monitoring system for these local authorities, providing insight of the needs in terms of prevention and health promotion, reactive care including emergencies, continuity of care, dealing with chronically ill mainly in the context of home care is crucial and creating equitable financing which take into account the differences between affluent and other parts within the city are needed. Local governments need information, assistance and capacity building on how to achieve practical solutions for these major challenges which lie ahead and will become more visible in the coming decades. The Community Oriented & Integrated Primary Care approach is a model that fits very well to tackle most of the challenges. Moreover, addressing health problems requires an intersectional approach at the local level, integrating health and welfare sectors with housing, work, education, and infrastructure.

Target Audience:

Leading General Practitioners, Family Physicians ,Primary Care health Experts ,Doctors, Research fellows and many more from leading universities, companies and medical research institutions, hospitals sharing their novel researches in the arena of General Practice and Primary Care.

Market value, Growth & Source of Funds

Rising demand and associated spending are being fuelled by an aging population; the growing prevalence of chronic diseases and comorbidities; development of costly clinical innovations; increasing patient awareness, knowledge, and expectations; and continued economic uncertainty despite regional pockets of recovery are just a few of the key issues and trends impacting the global primary care.

The IMF estimates that the region‘s population would cross the 50 million mark by 2020, providing impetus to the consumption of Primary healthcare services. Rising income levels and sedentary lifestyles have led to a higher prevalence of obesity and diabetes leading to a demand for specialized healthcare services. GCC population in the age group of 65 and above is expected to surge from 1.2 million in 2015 to 14.2 million in 2050, driving demand for healthcare services. Also, infant mortality in the GCC improved from 110 per 10,000 live births in 2000 to 78 in 2012.

The average costs for a hospital emergency departments visit is $1,354 vs. a primary care visit averaging less than $150 nationwide. According to the Department of Commerce, the average household spends 20 per cent of its discretionary spending on health care, with high-deductible plans becoming the dominant form for employee benefits. The 2015 Milliman Medical Index puts the total costs for a family of four at $24,671 last year. The average co-pay for a primary care visit to a traditional practice is $23 vs. $36 for a specialist.

Physicians working on General Practice and Women's Health Care:

General practitioner (GP) is a medical doctor who treats acute and chronic illnesses and provides preventive care and health education to patients. A primary care physician provides both the first contact for a person with an undiagnosed health concern as well as continuing care of varied medical conditions, not limited by cause, organ system, or diagnosis. A 2009 report by the New England Healthcare Institute determined that an increased demand on primary care by older, sicker patients and decreased supply of primary care practitioners has led to a crisis in primary care delivery. The research identified a set of innovations that could enhance the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of General Practice and Primary Care in the United States.
