On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 which authorized and directed the Secretary of War to commence the forced evacuation and internment of all persons of Japanese ancestry, including American citizens, who were living on the West Coast. This February will mark the 75th anniversary of this dark day in our nation's history.
The Tanforan Assembly Center Memorial Committee (TACMC) is currently working on the development of a permanent memorial at the Tanforan Mall in honor of those who were held at the Tanforan Assembly Center in San Bruno. To date, the TACMC has raised over $700,000 towards the memorial through grants from the National Parks Service and the County of San Mateo, as well as through numerous donations from individuals and businesses committed to remembering the events of Tanforan from just a few decades ago. The Committee is now within $300,000 of making the Memorial a reality, but there is still more work to be done!
