Event description

Description

Located in Conoy Township, the Lancaster Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Facility reduces the volume of waste by 90% through burning non-hazardous material. This process not only saves significant landfill space, but also produces enough electricity to power the equivalent of 30,000 area homes. In addition to reducing waste volume and producing renewable energy, the WTE Facility also recovers metals and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by eliminating the creation of methane had the waste been landfilled. During the tour, guests will visit the tipping floor where an overhead crane mixes waste in the storage pit, the Control Room where the plant is monitored by a trained technician 24/7 and ash storage building where ash is transferred for metal recovery and temporary storage.

The FREE Lancaster WTE Facility tour lasts approximately 60 minutes.

Due to limitations of the site and the safety of our guests, children must be at least 8 years of age and accompanied by an adult.

Visitors are required to wear clothing that is appropriate for an industrial environment. Closed-toed shoes are mandatory. Sandals, flip-flops or open toe/open heel shoes are prohibited. For the safety of our guests, any individual not appropriately dressed will be asked to refrain from participating in the tour.

The Lancaster WTE Facility is located at 1911 River Road, Bainbridge, 17502. Parking for the tour is located at the Admin Building. After turning into the facility entrance, the Admin Building is located on the right, directly across from the scale house.
