"’Cause, since I found I’m average,
I’m smart enough you see
To know there’s nothing special
I should expect of me.
"

The Average Child by Mike Buscemi

We are pleased to announce our lecture 'Mind the Gap' will be delivered by Sir John Jones. The ‘average child’ is, after all, the majority of our children and yet there is rarely an educational policy focus on this often overlooked group. Sir John will share his experience and knowledge of working in education and his ideas for addressing this deficit.

Knighted in 2003 for his services to education, much of his professional life was spent working in challenging schools across the North West of England. His achievements and reputation for straight talking, leadership and creativity have led him to be invited onto various organizations, panels and think tanks. You can find out more about Sir John here.

This year's lecture is an extra special occasion as we are celebrating our 70th anniversary. All attendees are welcome to view our exhibition on 70 years of SPTC during our welcome reception, as well as enjoy some complimentary hot food and drink. This will include a celebratory glass of wine.

We will also be making a special announcement.

Timings are as follows:

6:00pm AGM (Members Only)
6:30pm Welcome Reception with Refreshments
7:15pm Annual Lecture
9:00pm Finish

This event is free of charge but booking is essential. Members are warmly invited to attend the AGM. The lecture is open to all who have an interest in furthering parental engagement.

The Average Child by Mike Buscemi

I don’t cause teachers trouble;
My grades have been okay.
I listen in my classes.
I’m in school every day.

My teachers think I’m average;
My parents think so too.
I wish I didn’t know that, though;
There’s lots I’d like to do.

I’d like to build a rocket;
I read a book on how.
Or start a stamp collection…
But no use trying now.

’Cause, since I found I’m average,
I’m smart enough you see
To know there’s nothing special
I should expect of me.

I’m part of that majority,
That hump part of the bell,
Who spends his life unnoticed
In an average kind of hell.
