Healthier Kids Foundation is hosting its 6th Annual Symposium on the Status of Children’s Health on May 13th at the Kellogg Auditorium in Santa Clara. Emphasizing the importance of engaging in “Healthier Earlier” strategies, this year’s Symposium will focus on the social determinants of health.
The Symposium will feature four incredible speakers: Douglas Jutte, M.D., M.P.H., Patricia Barreto, M.D., M.P.H., Peter Long, Ph.D., and Wendelin Slusser, M.D., M.P.H, and Karina Perez, MS, RDN.
About the Speakers:
Douglas Jutte, M.D., M.P.H. is Executive Director of the Build Healthy Place Network while also serves as a pediatrician, professor, and population health researcher at the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health. His distinguished career includes publications in Pediatrics, the American Journal of Public Health, and Health Affairs, among others and leadership roles in the Federal Reserve Bank and RWJ Foundation’s Healthy Communities Initiative.
Peter Long, Ph.D. is president and CEO of Blue Shield of California Foundation, leading the Foundation on its mission to increase accessibility, affordability, and quality of healthcare throughout California. Dr. Long’s extensive work on health policy includes leadership roles at the Henry J. Kaiser Foundation and The California Endowment. Beyond his role as CEO, he is currently involved in several healthcare and professional organizations, including the Board of Directors for Grantmakers in Health, the Governance Board at the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review., and the Institute of Medicine’s Roundtable on Value and Science-Drive Health Care.
Patricia Barreto, M.D., M.P.H. is a pediatrician and independent consultant. Prior, she served on the UCLA faculty where she was Director of Community Programs and Evaluation for the UCLA Community Health and Advocacy Training Program. Her work in the Bay Area includes working at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center’s Pediatric Healthy Lifestyle Center. It was during this time she began her consulting work with the Healthier Kids Foundation of Santa Clara County, conceptualizing and developing the “10 Steps to a Healthier You” program.
Wendelin Slusser, M.D., M.S. currently serves as Associate Vice Provost for UCLA Chancellor Block’s Healthy Campus Initiative, HS Clinical Professor of Pediatrics in the UCLA Schools of Medicine and Public Health, and Co-Founder and Medical Director of the UCLA Fit for Healthy Weight Program. Dr. Slusser has long been a community leader of health programs focused on health promotion, infant and child nutrition, and physical fitness. In 2015 she was one of three UC faculty honored by President Napolitano for outstanding leadership on the UC Global Food Initiative and in 2010 received the Robert F. Allen Symbol of H.O.P.E Award.
