Signs to recognize your Heroes on the Course

Do you want to recognize who you are running/walking for? Check out these great options available to you! We have created two sign options to be purchased that will be displayed on the 5K course.

The two options include:

$5.00 Sign

- Color or draw a sign! These signs will be 11x17 and will be colored however you wish, by you! Signs can be purchased the morning of the race to be drawn/colored and then be displayed around the race course. If you would like to color your poster before the race, stop into the VNSC located in Old Main 118 on the UW-Superior campus and pick up supplies. After the race is done you will be able to collect your sign and take it home with you. Contact the VNSC at 715-394-8406 or vnsc@uwsuper.edu with any questions.

$10.00 Sign

- 11x17 sign that will be printed before race day and placed around the race course for you. These signs will be able to have a picture image displayed in color. We will be printing the signs and placing them around the course for you. After the race is done you will be able to collect your sign and take it home with you.

- If this is the option you would like to go with, please see this example we have created. We ask that you send us a picture of who you are dedicating the sign to, the name of the person you are running/walking for, and who the sign may be from/a few words to the person you are dedicating this sign to. You can also state why you are running/walking for this person. We ask that you have the picture, name, and who the sign is from sent all together to vnsc@uwsuper.edu by Sept. 26th at noon. Contact the VNSC at 715-394-8406 or vnsc@uwsuper.edu with any questions.

We ask that you purchase the sign option before sending us your images and/or picking up supplies for the drawn sign. You can purchase your sign through the available ticketing options above.

5K Race Flyers

We appreciate the support we continue to receive from the community about this event. Here is the flyer for the 2019 Running for Our Heroes 5K!

What the Proceeds from this Race Benefit

The UW-Superior Veteran and Nontraditional Center Emergency Fund and the Douglas County Soldiers and Sailors Relief Fund are the two causes where 100% of this race's proceeds will go.

The Soldier and Sailor Relief Fund (SSRF) is an act that passed the Wisconsin State Legislature on April 2, 1887 to ensure that "no honorably discharged Soldier, Sailor, or Marine [would] be sent to a poorhouse". This act is what led way to the 1935 establishment of a County Veteran Service Officer in each Wisconsin county. Douglas County currently staffs three full time persons in their Veterans Service Office, who serve more than 4,000 veterans. Through the utilization of the SSRF they are able to help our local Veterans with small expenses such as gas cards, all the way up to a month's rent to a Veteran in need.

In the fall of 2012 UW-Superior opened the Veteran and Nontraditional Student Center (VNSC) to provide programming in support of student success for our veteran and/or nontraditional students. The Center serves 35% of the undergraduate enrollment each term including veterans, students with children, current military service members, dependents or spouses of veterans, married students, and students 25 years or older. Over 5% of all our undergraduates are veteran/military students. The VNSC strives to enhance the student experience by connecting them on their educational journey at UW-Superior. The Center is a place on campus for students to relax, do homework, seek advisement, or visit with one of the many outreach service professionals that provide on-sight support services. Also, Success Net will pair you with a fellow veteran and/or nontraditional student who knows the ropes -- the campus, community, services, events, how to get connected and more.

The VNSC Emergency Fund was established in Fall 2017 to provide financial assistance to UW-Superior students involved in a catastrophic or emergency situation involving circumstances which are sudden, unexpected, and/or affect a student's ability to be academically successful. Examples include but are not limited to: an accident, illness, travel for a funeral, fire damge, or need for temporary housing.
