6-12 Math Curriculum Team Session 4 - Mathematics: The Role of Assessment in a Mathematics Classroom

Continuing the learning started in summer 2013, schools with grades 6–12 who have not adopted a Core Curriculum program (Connected Math Program 3 or Common Core, Inc.) are invited to attend sessions led by the DOE central office staff members focused on shifting pedagogy in math.

As a result of this session, participants will:

  • Understand different types and purposes of assessment.
  • Be able to develop thoughtful assessments aligned to specific purposes.
  • Be able to formatively assess and monitor students’ learning to adapt teaching and revise lessons and units.
  • Be able to collect meaningful assessment data and share that data with students to support their independence.
  • Understand how observing students and their work can be used to deepen their understanding to develop new learning.


Curriculum teams participating in this series of five sessions will deepen their content area expertise and understanding of Common Core-aligned curriculum and pedagogy—with explicit connections to Danielson’s Framework for Teaching components. As a result of participation in ongoing cycles of inquiry, participants in these sessions will learn to:

  • Understand different types of questions and their purposes, including the use of questions as a differentiation strategy and a way to deepen student learning. 
  • Be able to pose high-quality questions and problems that prompt students to deepen their developing thinking about the mathematical content of a lesson.
  • Be able to use questions to advance student thinking, uncover student misconceptions, and increase student engagement.
  • Be able to articulate and use strategies for increasing student discourse that promotes conceptual understanding.

Timing: All workshops will take place from 8:30 a.m – 3 p.m. Registration will open at 7:30 a.m. Please arrive by 8:15 a.m. so we can begin promptly at 8:30 a.m.

Location: February 5, 6, 11 at the CUNY Graduate Center (365 Fifth Avenue); February 12 at the Faculty House at Columbia University (64 Morningside Drive)

Registration: Registration will close Friday, January 31. Please speak to your principal before registering for this session. Each participant needs to register individually.
