On May 1, 1951 the first director of the "Voice of Free Czechoslovakia," Ferdinand Peroutka, vowed that Radio Free Europe's Czech- and Slovak-language programs would "smash the Communist monopoly on speaking to the Czech nation." Throughout the Cold War, Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty programs brought uncensored news and hope for a better future to millions in Communist-ruled Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Today, RFE's broadcasts in 21 countries where a free press is banned or not fully established -- such as Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Russia -- continue to inspire bloggers, journalists and others who believe that free access to information is vital to open closed societies.
