Event description

Do people tell you that you're funny? Have you always wondered what it takes to become a comedian? Maybe you have loads of comedy ideas but don't know what to do with them? Or do you want to try something different?

If so, this comedy workshop is tailored for you to learn new skills, step out of your comfort zone and have a really good laugh along the way.

But, I've never done comedy before? What if I'm not funny?

You don't need any experience of comedy writing - just have an interest in comedy, writing and being creative. I have taught people who have never done any comedy writing at all and people who've had experience. The workshop is designed to bring the funny out of you no matter where you're starting from. Plus, you are in the workshop with other likeminded people who are in the same boat as you.

What is the course?

The Cumbria School of Comedy presents the 6 week 'Write up, Stand up and Perform' comedy course taking place from October to November that is tailored for you to learn new skills, step out of your comfort zone, get motivated to write something to perform and have a really good laugh doing it.

Throughout the course you will learn;

  • What makes something funny

  • What it really means to 'write'

  • How to bust through creative blocks

  • How to generate comedy ideas from personal experiences and stories

  • How to expand on ideas and subjects

  • How to inject comedy into your own projects for stories, radio plays, stand up, sketch and more

  • How to create something from nothing

  • Improvising techniques

  • Performing tips

  • How to create characters

  • How to perform stand up comedy

  • What it takes to write a show or set

  • Learn what your strengths are as a performer and writer

  • How to tackle negative thoughts about not being good enough or starting a project

  • Plus, you will get 1-2-1 time with me and get to ask any questions about the industry

Who is Jane?

I'm a multi-comedy award finalist who has had sell out runs of my one woman shows at Brighton and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals over the last five years. I've also been heard on BBC Radio 4, BBC Radio Cumbria and BBC Radio Extra. I ran a successful comedy night in Brighton for three years and produce a couple of comedy podcasts. I have done full one woman comedy character shows and I do straight stand up. I also do voice acting for radio plays and voice over.

During the workshop you will be able to ask me any questions about the industry and have some 1-2-1 time to talk about any creative projects or get some advice for your own career. I share all my experience and secrets about the comedy industry - (Most of which I wish I'd been told when i started out.)

I've taught over 300 people across the UK and abroad to help them get on their comedy path. My workshop course students have gone on to do stand up, win comedy competitions, write one woman shows, write children's books and write scripts / sketches.
