April 4th, 1968. The Kallimarmaro Stadium is abuzz, with thousands of people gathered and millions listening through their radios. The AEK vs. SLAVIA of Prague basketball game has just begun. A girl in love is dreaming of her wedding day, while the future husband becomes more desperate with every Greek ball going through the hoop. An elderly husband and wife remember the home they left behind. A young communist prisoner cheers from his jail cell and a PROPO betting shop become the place where old and new wounds resurface. Years before this night, three Constantinopolitans decided to create an athletic union that will tell their story. At the end of this night, Greek history will have changed forever.

Marios Piperides’ comedy SMUGGLING HENDRIX will open LAGFF at the Egyptian, on Wednesday, June 6, 7 pm. Still, as a project, SMUGGLING HENDRIX won the IPDF Aegean Award in 2014. Last April it won Best International Narrative Feature at the Tribeca Film Festival. Filmmakers will be in attendance, and the screening will be followed by a catered reception at the Egyptian’s courtyard. Lot parking is available for $10-20.

Yiannis, a fading musician, is planning to leave crisis-ridden Cyprus for a better life abroad. His plans are put on hold when his dog Jimi runs away and crosses the UN buffer zone to the occupied side of the Island. Through the simple story of a man who searches for his dog, SMUGGLING HENDRIX gives a vivid demonstration of how the fences we build, both real and imagined, between ourselves and others, can be broken down once we recognize the familiarity in the face of the unknown.
