Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will understand the key elements of posttraumatic growth (PTG).

  • Participants will learn specific techniques to facilitate posttraumatic growth with their clients.

  • Participants will gain an understanding of how posttraumatic growth can stem from posttraumatic stress disorder.

  • Participants will gain knowledge about the latest research regarding posttraumatic growth and how that information is useful in assisting their clients.

Participants will gain an understanding of:

  • trauma, psychological distress and other factors involved in the development of PTSD

  • the history of the field of PosttraumaticGrowth (PTG), and knowledge of the pioneers in the field

  • Assumptive World, Deliberate Rumination, Accommodation and other key PTG concepts and processes

  • the importance of support,disclosure, and affect regulation with PTG

  • the role of the therapist in PTG and the concept of Expert Companion

  • the biology of trauma and how it relates to both PTSD and PTG

  • the key concepts of compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, secondary traumatization

  • the possibility of Vicarious Posttraumatic Growth (VPTG) and how it relates to mental health professionals

  • areas of growth as it relates to PTG

  • research on PTG, VPTG and the areas of growth

  • how to recognize posttraumatic growth and the role a narrative can play in facilitatingposttraumatic growth with clients

  • phases of PTG

  • the developing model for PTG

  • how to apply knowledge you gained during this PTG training with your clients

Workshop Leader:

Keith Meyer, M.S., LMHC, has been a counselor for over 30 years. For the past 15 years of his career, he has specialized in the trauma field. His trauma experience with clients includes personal trauma, nonpersonal trauma, natural disasters, childhood abuses, terrorist attacks and service to veterans & their families. His practice emphasizes serving people who have experienced trauma event(s), to assist them in understanding how those experiences affect their lives and how trauma can provide an opportunity for Posttraumatic Growth (PTG). Keith conducted over 20 posttraumatic growth trainings in 2018. He provides training and consultation on PTSD, Trauma, and PTG to colleges, government agencies, mental health providers, medical health providers, and nonprofit agencies (including several county Veteran Courts).

Posttraumatic Growth Workshop for Mental Health Professionals has been approved by NBCC for NBCC credit. Mental Health Professionals, LLC is solely responsible for all aspects of the program. NBCC Approval No.SP-3194.
