In this interactive workshop, participants will learn how to better serve the needs of sexual and gender minorities in a clinical setting. Participants will be introduced to the increased risks for depression, shame, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide within LGBTQ populations.

Practical ways to reduce and eliminate sexual and gender identity microaggressions in healthcare settings will be taught to participants, as well as methods for providing better mental health treatment to sexual and gender minorities and other stigmatized-multicultural populations.

Course Objectives:

- Discuss at least two factors that contribute to shame, as well as elevated suicide risk among sexual and gender minorities

- Define appropriate terminology when addressing LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, Asexual) concerns.

- Explain why reparative conversion therapy (ex-gay therapy) is harmful to minors and therefore banned in some states.

- Identify microaggressions by developing skills for critically reflecting on our own social ecology and layers of identity.

- Discuss one way providers can improve clinical care to LGBTQIA clients.
