Description

The Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C. proudly presents the 5th Showcase of the OnStage Korea 2017 Season featuring 'The Global Arts Project - Dynamic Korean Dance: Traditional to Cosmopolitan” which aims to idealize Korean dance of the future for glocalization (globalization + localization) performed by Hyunju Lee Dance Company and Laban Movers.

The Global Arts Project aims to create a collaboration dance piece with dancers from different cultures by employing the Laban movement analysis. The Laban movement analysis has a theory which captures and analyzes fundamentals of human movement, and through which, one can deeply understand and interpret stylistic patterns of dance movement from other cultures. Forth is project, the dancers who have been trained in Laban Movement Analysis will collaborate to discover the fundamental principles of Korean dance and create an improvisational dance piece based on their findings. In addition, the purpose of this project is to introduce traditional and modern Korean arts to American artists and audiences in Washington, D.C. in collaboration with Laban movement specialists and media artists. The program will consist of two major parts: The Past with Korean traditional dance and the Present with Korean Contemporary dance including improvisational dance (Movement Choir).

Moreover, the performance seeks to break down the wall between the audience and the performer through dance movements with modern computer science used both as artistic methods and as objects of artistic inquiry. The multi-media performance embodies the spirit of movement with stillness through the mystery of the core which harmoniously handles the energy of the universe and through the communion with those experiencing the union of the body, mind, and spirit with real-time computerized video as extensions of performers. This environment actively invites the audience to the performance space and would practically share dancers’ expressions and energies.

Hyunju Lee Dance Company was established in 1994 in South Korea and most of its members are from major Korean dance associations and alumni of Kyunghee University in Seoul. This group successfully has propagated Korean culture and spirit, has planned and choreographed many performances, and has received a lot of positive feedback from international festivals. More than standardization of performance, Hyunju Lee Dance Company wants to bring out the natural beauty and simplicity of Korean dance. The simple and deep (non-verbal communication) methods allow them to connect with many other cultures and bring down the language barriers. Most of all, Hyunju Lee Dance Company is continuously researching and studying globalizations of Korean dance in both artistic and philosophical points of view through the Laban movement analysis.
