Event Details

This two-day, invitation-only conference which draws together scholars from many different universities and disciplines to discuss developments in text as data research.  Researchers from political science, computer science and linguistics investigate new approaches to utilizing text in political science research. Text has always been a valuable resource for political science research. However, recent developments in digital archiving as well as breakthroughs in automatic language-processing methodologies from the fields of information retrieval, natural language processing, and machine learning are creating unprecedented opportunities for searching, categorizing, and extracting political information from text.

Jointly sponsored by the Ford Center for Global Citizenship at Northwestern University, the Department of Methodology at the London School of Economics, and the Institute for Quantitative Social Science at Harvard University, this year’s event will take place in Chicago, hosted by the Ford Center. These conferences are co-organized by Ken Benoit (PI on the Quantitative Analysis of Textual Data for Social Sciences project at LSE), Daniel Diermeier (Ford Center director), and Arthur Spirling (“New Directions in Text Analysis” at Harvard).
