5th Annual MANA 5K Walk/Run
Sat, June 24, 2017, 8:30 AM – 2:00 PM MDT
The Queen Center is excited to announce our 5th Annual MANA 5K Walk/Run on Saturday June 24, 2017 at Salt Lake City's Liberty Park.
The Queen Center was established to unite and empower Pacific Islander communities to live healthier lifestyles. Heart disease is currently the leading cause of death among Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders and cancer is the fastest-growing cause of death. NHPIs also have alarming rates of diabetes and obesity and are at higher risk for using cancer-causing tobacco products. Join us as we walk (or run) towards a better future.
In order to make a difference in our community, the Queen Center will donate all proceeds from this 5K event to two deserving members in our community, Sabrina Inoke and Salesi Toutai:
Sabrina is 2 years old and has been diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder known as Cyclin-Dependent Kinase-like 5. CDKL5 is a rare X-linked genetic disorder that results in early onset, difficult to control seizures, and severe neurodevelopmental impairment. Sabrina continues to live with seizures, has lost her sight, and is wheelchair bound. Her parents have made great sacrifices to get her the best care possible, while also providing for their growing family. More information regarding Sabrina’s condition can be found on her awareness page: http://awareofangels.org/sabrina-cyclin-dependent-kinase-like-5-cdkl5/
Salesi Toutai- At age of 30, Salesi found out he had end stage renal (kidney) failure. They immediately started him on dialysis 3 times a week and he continues to do at home dialysis. It’s been one year since his family's lives have changed. On average, kidney patients pay about $20k a month collectively for dialysis, medications, etc. It has taken a great toll on this young couple financially, emotionally & physically. Through everything, Salesi still remains positive & has a great outlook on life. Their goal is to get him on a transplant list by Summer 2017. Please help us support Sabrina and Salesi by participating in our 5K event to walk towards a better future for members in our community.
