Event description

Description

The 5th Annual Chess & Community Conference will be a day to remember. The event will begin with opening remarks from Athens City manager Blaine Williams, followed by presentations by a line up of dynamic speakers. Four outstanding high school students will share their vision for impacting the local community and be awarded with Think Before You Move Scholarships. Iconic speaker and journalist, Charlayne Hunter-Gault will present the keynote address.

Students will have an opportunity to warm up in the annual Justice Served chess match, where they will go head to head in a friendly game with the Athens-Clarke Police Department. An art exhibit featuring middle and high school students will display the talents of local youth. The day will culminate with the youth chess tournament, where only one team in each division will take home the win.
