Description

Greetings to All!

Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. with patronage from the City of Spartanburg invite you to become a sponsor for our 5th Annual Brian Wofford Memorial Flag Football Tournament. The first four years of the tournament was a huge success and our efforts are to continue to grow this event each and every year. Because of your generous support and that of several others, we have been able to donate to the Kaelyn Wofford Scholarship Fund and the Brian Wofford Foundation. Our goal is to raise $10,000 by the time Kaelyn graduates from Spartanburg High in 2018. This year, the tournament will be held on May 20th, 2017 at 9am on the campus of Spartanburg High School. The event will benefit the Kaelyn Wofford Scholarship Fund and the Brian Wofford Foundation.

Brian O’Neal Wofford, a Clemson University honor graduate and stellar football/track star of Spartanburg High School, received numerous accolades and awards in recognition of his athletic achievements. He was a High School All-American wide receiver at Spartanburg High School and an all-time leading receiver at Clemson University. While at Clemson University, Brian excelled academically as a student athlete and named a Clemson University Scholar. He was also a prominent member of the Kappa Lambda Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Brian began his career with Florence County Parks and Recreation and subsequently joined the City of Spartanburg Parks and Recreation as Superintendent. Brian’s passion for his hometown was evident, as was his professionalism.

Brian was tragically taken away from us on May 18, 2012 due to a motorcycle accident. In his memory, the Kaelyn Wofford Scholarship Fund was established to create an opportunity for Brian’s daughter, Kaelyn Wofford, to pursue higher learning through means of a post secondary education. The Fund’s campaign is the 2.5 Initiative. The 2.5 is a derivative of the number 25 worn by Brian. The 2 serves as a reminder to look twice to save a motorcyclist’s life and the 5 correlates with the 5 fun-filled activities and motorcycle awareness the partnership has planned for the week. It is the mission of the 2.5 Initiative to promote motorcycle awareness and education in the community with the goal of improving motorcycle safety.

The Flag Football Tournament will consist of teams from the Southeastern area. The teams will participate in a pool-play tournament to determine the “King of the Southeast”. As a part of growing this event, the committee added a powder-puff game that received great reviews from the fans in attendance for the tournament.

As in previous years, the tournament will coincide with a Bike Ride that will consist of members from multiple Bike Clubs in the Greenville and Spartanburg areas. The Bike Ride will start at Barnet Park and end at Spartanburg High School.
