Description

Join the Ionia County-based Mid-Michigan Word Gatherers for our 5th annual one-day fall conference for "word artists and other creatives" from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at The Right Door for Hope, Recovery and Wellness in Ionia. This quality learning experience is open to all with a story to tell. And it's free!

We're celebrating our 10th anniversary this year with a special conference that includes five sessions on topics of interest to a variety of writers:

  • Throw Caution to the Wind and WRITE! - Numerous simple writing techniques, methods, and prompts will be shared and practiced, with the guidance of author Kristine E. Brickey to jumpstart our words and free up our brains to create despite our inner demons of uncertainty and doubt and the myth that is writers' block.
  • Finding the Courage to Be a Famous Writer by Building a Creative Author Platform - Freelance writer and managing editor Michael Dwyer will discuss how to build and reach the audience every writer desires and needs through websites, social media, personal appearances, and more.
  • Screenwriting: Technical and Creative - Screenwriter and actor Lisa Grady will take us through the basic parts of a screenplay and help us discover just how creative we can be. Next, we’ll practice what we’ve learned with some fun and freeing writing exercises.
  • Looking and Seeing - With pen and paper (and crayons and markers) in hand, and the assistance of artist Vivian Nan Grady, participants will have opportunities to experience creative acts of looking and seeing and rendering what has become known.
  • Creating an Opening for Yourself - Author Bob Tarte shares tips on writing the kind of strong first chapter to your memoir (or other book) that agents and publishers are looking for. He’ll talk about getting the setting, characters, and narrative elements in place – plus the crucial importance of writing “grabber” opening paragraphs.

... plus a birthday cake and other surprises! Lunch is on your own.

Writers with published books for sale are invited to come and set up in the "bookstore" during the lunch break. There also will be an open mic session at lunch for those who want to read their work before a live audience, and chances throughout the day to chat about writing with other creative people.
