504, the ADA, and Public School Students: The Latest Lessons for General and Special Educators

*This is a one (1) day event - Thursday, May 2, 2019

Audience:
PreK-Grade 12: General and Special Education Teachers and Administrators, and other staff members

Presenter:

Perry Zirkel, Ph.D., J.D., LL.M
University Professor Emeritus of Education and Law
Lehigh University, PA

Description:

Many educators struggle with the legal requirements for students with disabilities, in part due to insufficient preservice preparation and lack of differentiation between lore and law when learning on the job. Much in-service legal professional development related to special education is on the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which sometimes leaves Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act as a misunderstood and often misapplied "consolation prize."

To address the confusion between 504 and IDEA requirements and legal issues, this professional learning opportunity will show the latest corresponding IDEA developments as the baseline for systematic, updated differentiation outside of IDEA. The agenda provides successive half-day segments* on basic and more advanced issues related to the latest 504- and ADA-related legal lessons.
