Last year marked the 500th anniversary of the death of Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known as Raphael, painter, architect, and indisputable genius of the High Renaissance. It was said that Raphael’s brushwork could give flesh and life to anything from complex theology to a flirtatious baker’s daughter. Born in the remote mountain town of Urbino, Raphael rose to the rank of confidant to the Renaissance’s most powerful popes, Julius II and Leo X, who entrusted him with providing the paintings, architecture, and archaeology to reconcile Catholic Rome with its pagan past. Join art historian and advisor Alard von Rohr-Demmin as he traces the story of this ‘angel who fell from heaven.’ von Rohr-Demmin will explore and discuss Raphael’s short but beautiful life, extraordinary genius and influence on artists of the 20th and 21st centuries including Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, and Bill Viola.

Alard von Rohr-Demmin trained as an art historian at the Courtauld Institute/London, and modern and contemporary art consultant at Goldsmith College/London, Alard von Rohr-Demmin guides numerous American high-level delegations through Europe’s artistic centers. Since 2006, von Rohr-Demmin has led the Deutsche Bank Collection’s team of art consultants in London. He is Deutsche Bank’s chief art lecturer for London’s annual Frieze and Frieze Masters art fairs.
