Event description

Description

As technology advances, new challenges are presented for digital forensics teams. Devices unsupported by industry tools, password-protected or even damaged devices may not present readily available options to retrieve data. In some situations, the only possible option for the retrieval of data from an electronic device may be removal and direct read from the chip(s) attached to the printed circuit boards.

Electronic device manufacturers continue to evolve their electronics designs to address ever more powerful devices and smaller circuit board components. Changes to the manufacturer assembly processes including epoxy underfills, conformal coatings matched with thinner chips, and fragile dies. These changes force the evolution of techniques by anyone addressing and handling modern electronic devices.

The electronic manufacturing industry has created an extensive body of literature and standards on the proper handling of electronics devices and their components. This existing literature describes in detail appropriate handling practices.

VTO's chip removal class is distinguished by a strong emphasis on the science behind chip removal. Class participants walk away grounded in the industry standards and peer-reviewed literature that guides the daily practices of the digital forensics labs of VTO Inc.

The second emphasis of the chip removal class is daily hands-on activities with a variety of tools and machines required to safely remove, read and even reattach chips to printed circuit boards. Class participants will gain entry level experience through advanced equipment use to understand the theory behind each technique and identify the right equipment within the budget constraints of their agencies.

VTO’s strong emphasis on science and practice grounds class participants with a proper, defensible understanding of accepted removal practices. This emphasis is linked with daily hands-on practice utilizing industry leading equipment and techniques.
