Description
Five boroughs. Five slices. One day. Zero cars.
Are you up for the 5 Boro Pizza Challenge?
Calling all pizza enthusiasts: here's a challenge you'll only find in New York City. It's like competitive eating had a pizza baby with The Amazing Race. It's a test of your subway savvy and gastrointestinal fortitude, a demonstration of your Instagram filter prowess. And all for a great cause.
Here's the back-story: a few years ago, two hungry friends decided to take the ultimate challenge: they were going to visit all five boroughs in one day and eat a slice of pizza in each. And they were going to do it without using any cars. It started as an entertaining way to spend an afternoon, but a tradition was born; a beautiful, delicious tradition. Now, for the first time ever, we are opening up the 5 Boro Pizza Challenge to the masses to raise funds for a good cause while spreading the pizza love.
Here's how it works: we'll gather at 11 a.m. under the arch in Washington Square Park. There, everyone will receive a list of the appointed five pizzerias and their addresses (we will only include pizzerias that serve slices) and start the clock. You'll go to each one, in any order you prefer, eat a slice and document it on Instagram (via our hashtag #5boropizzachallenge). When you're done, you'll return to the after-party location (TBA) in Greenwich Village. There, you will be anointed 5 Boro Pizza Challenge Champion (and you'll have the tshirt to prove it).
Prizes will be awarded to the first person and team to complete the challenge, as well as other prizes for people who demonstrate a fierce love of pizza but prefer to take their sweet time.
The 5 Boro Pizza Challenge is a fundraiser for Transportation Alternatives, NYC's leading advocate for walking, biking and public transportation, so you can't use a car. You'll have to get around the way most New Yorkers do -- subway, bus, ferry, bike, and of course, your own two feet. Taxis, Uber, Lyft and any other private car services are off limits too.
Registration includes entry into the 5 Boro Pizza Challenge and a t-shirt, while supplies last. You cover the cost of pizza and transportation.
FRIDAY, JULY 29 -- UPDATE: Due to the fact that we had to place the t-shirt order on Monday, we had to estimate the total number and variety of sizes. So if you signed up after July 24, we can't guarantee you'll get the shirt size that you've requested, but we'll make every effort to accommodate you.
