Join us for the 4th annual Afrikana Independent Film Festival!!

Thursday, September 12 - Sunday, September 15, 2019

AIFF is a four-day event of full of dynamic indie film, live performances, panel discussions, meet & greets, happy hours, workshops and parties at some of Richmond's flyest spaces!

With over 40 films from across the diaspora and filmmakers and artists from across the country, we're taking Afriakna and the RVA Arts District to a whole new level!! From our cocktail hours to mixers, VIP events, and epic after-parties, it's going down in RVA!

Richmond, Afrikana thanks you because without you there is no us and we are excited to be a part of the Black creative energy surging through our city. It's that energy of excellence, resilience, and community that has allowed Afrikana to thrive since 2014 and now, 5 years later, present out 3rd annual multi-day fest! Thank you and we will see you there!!!

Thursday, September 12th:

Opening night reception at The Valentine. We're kicking off the 4th Annual Afrikana Independent Film Festival with an Afrikana x Angry Black Female panel that will use snippets from the highly anticipated film, Harriet to explore how her legacy of liberation and self-determination can influence how we move forward.

The evening begins with a live performance by Calvin Presents!

Friday, September 13th:

Spotlight Screening: The Remix: Hip Hop x Fashion

Meet us at the Institute for Contemporary Art for the VA premiere of The Remix: Hip Hop x Fashion by award-winning filmmakers, Lisa Cortes and Farah X. A story of the women who shifted the culture and created some of the most legendary looks in hip-hop.

Screening followed by Ladies Night, a panel discussion with celebrity stylist and designer Misa Hylton, fashion designer April Walker, and the films co-directors, Lisa Cortes and Farah X.


Saturday, September 14th:

Saturday Matinee Screening: The Central Park Five

Meet us back at the ICA for an encore screening of The Central Park Five documentary by Ken Burns, David McMahon, and Sarah Burns. This film, originally released in 2012, takes a deep dive into the Central Park Five case that inspired the critically acclaimed Netflix series, When They See Us by director Ava DuVernay.

Screening followed by a moderated discussion with Central Park 5 exoneree, Raymond Santana

Short Film Showcase

Afrikana will take over the RVA Arts district presenting a host of short and feature-length film screenings, panel discussions, workshops, and free youth programming from 1 – 6pm. Venues include 1708 Gallery, The Black History Museum, Candela Books, ADA, Elgeba Folklore Society, Art 180, Black Iris, and Quirk Hotel.

Saturday Night Spotlight

30 Year Anniversary Screening of Spike Lee's seminal work, Do The Right Thing as C'st le Vin

Sunday, September 15th:

The Afrikana tradition continues with a filmmaker and Afrikana member’s trolley ride and brunch highlighting Black Richmond - hosted by Untold RVA, sponsored by Croaker's Spot Restaurants.

AFRIKANA ALL-ACCESS VIP PASSES are on sale now – 2 for $80 or $50.00 each – which gives access to all Afrikana events including 40 films from across the diaspora, panels, parties, and workshops (excludes filmmaker only events).

1-day passes and individual tickets available.
