Event description

Description

Join us for a practice 4H Marine Ecology Event!

What: Marine species ID and knowledge contest, inlcuding 5 topic areas: plants, invertebrates, vertebrates, scavenger hunt, and multiple choice. All study guides, species lists, and other information available from: http://florida4h.org/programsandevents_/marine/

Who: This event is open to any youth (juniors and above) interested in testing their knowledge of Florida's marine species.

Why: Many youth attend mock marine ecology events to practice for the statewide Marine Ecology Event (http://florida4h.org/programsandevents_/marine/). The ID contest will follow the same rules and format as the statewide event so youth can get familiar with the contest format (e.g., organization of specimens, station rotation, and how to use answer cards) before the big day. Any youth are welcome, and those new to the contest may wish to start with the practice event this year, and attend the statewide event next year. Either way, this event will be a great way for youth to test their skills and engage more with marine natural resources!

Where: The FWC's George Kirkpatrick Marine Lab (12930 SW 67th Pl, Cedar Key FL 32625). It is the large blue building on stilts on the left as your cross the first bridge in to Cedar Key. Take the first left after the bridge, park, and ring the doorbell for entry in to the lab.

Schedule:

10:00 - 10:20 AM - Sign-in and Orientation

10:20 - 10:40 AM - Rotation 1

10:40 - 11:00 AM - Rotation 2

11:00 - 11:20 AM - Rotation 3

11:40 AM - 12:00 PM - Rotation 5

*NOTE: The deadline to register for the statewide event (Oct 21) is the same day as this practice event so be sure to register youth in advance if you plan to attend.

*NOTE: The Cedar Key Seafood Festival (9am-4pm) and the Seahorse Key Open House (9am-3pm) will also be occurring on October 21st and are great local activities to enjoy after the Mock Event concludes.
