The NLG Cup is intentionally designed to reach all across Maryland and DC to give aspiring or talented gamers, regardless of location, a chance to compete and win cash and other prizes in a tournament on a regional (city/county) level while enabling unique, exciting, and more rewarding opportunities to play on larger stages. The NLG Cup 2023 is a hybrid (online and in person) tournament designed to give gamers a chance win big prizes and have a great time, sponsored by AwesomeCon. NLG Cup 2023 consists of 64 tournaments, four in each of for each of 16 regions in Maryland and DC (city/county). An unlimited number of people can participate. We encourage players to compete in region closest to them but players are allowed to compete in any region they wish. And no, you don't have to be a Maryland or DC resident to win.

Summary of how it works:

1. Register on EventBrite (choose your game, choose your region)
2. Receive links and instructions via email shortly before tournament time.
3. Log on from home online on your region's date.
4. Depending on the size of your region, either (a) winners are awarded and that tournament ends or (b)top 32 players compete in the High Regionals (there is no additional competitor fee).
5. In the case of High Regionals, a date and theater are selected to enable to top 32 players for the region to compete for larger prize winners and (if the region qualifies) invitations to AwesomeCon 2023 for the Championships
6. June - come enjoy a day or more at AwesomeCon and compete with for the ultimate prizing.

REGIONALS:

The NLG Cup is run initially on Challonge.com. We start 16 tournaments, one for each region in Maryland and DC (city/county). An unlimited number of people can participate. We encourage players to compete in their closest region but players are allowed to compete in any region they wish. Games are double-elimination or round robin, depending on number of registrants.

HIGH REGIONALS:

When any region has more than 128 competitors for any specific game, the TOP 32 competitors from Regionals are entered into the High Regionals which are played in front of a local audience of other players and spectators at a movie theater in that region.

Top 4 players in High Regionals which have more than 256 original competitors will be provided a 3-day pass to AwesomeCon 2023 at the Walter E Washington Convention Center in Washington, DC to enjoy the event and compete in the NLG Cup Championships against winners from other regions.

PRIZING AT THE HIGH REGIONAL LEVEL:

CHAMPIONSHIPS:

The Championships are held at AwesomeCon in June 2023. The TOP 4 competitors from each High Regional will be provided a 3-day pass to enjoy and explore AwesomeCon as well as compete in the NLG Cup Championships. There will be up to 64 competitors, depending on how many High Regionals qualify.

FAQs

Do I need to live in Maryland or DC to compete and win?

Nope, you don't. We only request that if your chosen region meets the threshold to qualify for High Regionals and you perform well enough that you make it to the top 32, that you are able to make the trip to the regional movie theater to compete on the big screen. If that goes well, you'll need to come to DC for the Championships at AwesomeCon.

Does every region have a winner?

Yes - every region with two or more competitors will have one or more winners.

Can I win money at regionals AND at the championships?

Absolutely! In fact, just the fact that you are going to the championships already means you've won cash.
