Event description

Description

Every year in the San Francisco Bay Area, when the first rains fall fungus lovers head to the Annual Fungus Fair: A Celebration of Wild Mushrooms. For one day each December, Bay Area mushroom hunters fan out and find fungi of all shapes and colors. The wonderful array of mushrooms collected are brought to one location where the fair organizer, Mycological Society of San Francisco, prepares the displays that are the center piece of the Fungus Fair. The public is invited to this family friendly event to tour the displays, engage in crafts and activities, watch cooking demonstrations, and attend talks all about fungi. Join us to learn a little more about the Bay Area's tasty, dangerous and weirdly wonderful fungi. The Fungus Fair provides information on the uses and abuses of fungi, with offers exhibits on ecology of fungi, fungi identification, and toxic mushrooms.

The Fair presents a huge display of locally collected mushrooms, often as many as 200 unique species. Local foragers may come to learn what local mushrooms are toxic, or deadly, which are safe and scrumptious species might be found through identification tutorials, cooking demonstrations, sales of recipe books, soups, snacks, and fresh edibles. Remember: Never eat any mushroom for which identification is not certain. Watch renowned Bay Area chefs prepare dishes such as Matsutakes & Roasted Cauliflower in Coriander Cream or Sautéed Caramel Candy Cap Pears and Dentelles.
