About this Event

47SOUL / Third World Ecology Trilogy / Naima Shalhoub / Tarik Kazaleh

MATATU Festival of Stories 2019 opens its seventh year with a seasonal dinner prepared by (James Beard semifinalist) Chef Reem Assil, a musical performance by Naima Shalhoub ft. Tarik Kazelah, filmmaker Rania Lee Khalil's cinematic performance of The Third World Ecology Trilogy (Palestinian Wildlife Project; The Pan African Asian Women’s Organization, Cairo to Conakry, 1960- 1965; Sania) and an Electro Arabic Dabke performance by 47SOUL.

REEM ASSIL founded Reem’s with a passion for the flavors of Arab street-corner bakeries and the vibrant communities where they’re located. Growing up in a Palestinian-Syrian household, Reem was surrounded by the aromas and tastes of food from the homeland and the connections they evoked of her heritage, family, and community.

Before dedicating herself to a culinary career, Reem worked for a decade as a community and labor organizer, and brings the warmth of community to all her events. She is a graduate of the the competitive food business incubator program, La Cocina. and business accelerator program ICA: Fund Good Jobs. Reem was a 2018 James Beard Semi-Finalist for Best Chef West, San Francisco Magazine's 2018 Chef of the Year and San Francisco Chronicle's 2017 Rising Star Chef.

NAIMA SHALHOUB & TARIK KAZELAH are Oakland-based Arab-American artists that have been performing, creating and composing music together since 2012. Kazaleh is an MC, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist who has toured throughout the Middle East, Europe and the United States. Shalhoub is a vocalist, composer and musician who has toured Lebanon and throughout the United States. They draw upon their Arab music traditions and American soul repertoire while experimenting with sound and lyric.

RANIA LEE KHALIL works in performance and moving image for live audiences, reflecting on the beauty and disappearance of indigenous plant, animal, and human (culture)s. Interweaving reflections on ecology, third world feminism, post coloniality and healing, Khalil's expanded cinema performances take place on political and embodied registers. Originally trained in dance, somatic movement and Butoh, Khalil brings a sense of quiet and movement to her performances and moving images.

Her original works have been seen in such places as The Judson Church, La Mama Galleria, Martin Segal Theater, Utopia Station and The Ontological-Hysteric Theater in New York; Aomori Art Museum Japan, Al Ma’mal Contemporary Art Foundation Palestine, Zawya Cinema Egypt, Kiasma Museum for Contemporary Art Finland and the 2015 Venice Biennale. Awards include NYFA (US), Kone Foundation (Finland), CIMO foundation (Finland), Erasmus Mundus (Europe), Fund for Women Artists (US), Zebra Poetry Film Festival (Germany).

47soul السبعة و أربعين is an Electro Arabic Dabke (Shamstep) band formed in Amman Jordan in 2013. The members are rooted in Bilad Al-Sham, spanning the divides from Amman to the Galilee to Ramallah and the rest of the Palestinian Diaspora. This new sound of 47SOUL has rapidly amassed fans in the Arab World and Europe by blasting the electric Arabic Dabke sound through underground music scenes. On top of the beats that have been bumping in the Arab World for centuries, 47SOUL hypes it up with analog synthesizers, hypnotic guitar lines, and shattering verses from the four singers. Every show ends in relentless dance and trance from all parties involved. Their lyrics, mixing Arabic and English, call for celebration and freedom in the struggle for equality, inside Bilad Al Sham and throughout the world.

Named after rural share taxis, MATATU is a cultural experience vehicle that shuttles local audiences to global destinations via film & performance. The platform engages in a public inquiry around the role of the African Diaspora in a contemporary urban American context, asking, “How does an Afro-Future actually materialize without some intentional framing by creative citizens from around the Diaspora,” and “Where are the occasions to envision strategies for health in post-colonial Black culture?”
