Thursday Morning Keynote | October 12, 2017 | 8:45am – 9:45am

Lindsey Goodwin, PhD, Professor of Management at the Robert P. Stiller School of Business at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont

Leadership Lessons From a 4-Year-Old: Ask More Questions

Why is the sky blue? Why don’t we have states in the shape of a circle? How old is the earth? Our youngest learners are gifted question askers, as any early childhood educator can attest. As adults, however, we shift our our energy from asking questions to getting the ‘right’ answer. Management Professor and Appreciative Inquiry specialist, Dr. Lindsey Godwin, will invite us to re-examine the power of inquiry in our lives, both personally and professionally. She will explore how questions shape our reality, our ideas about possibilities for the future, how we see children in our programs, our peers, and our very selves. As she will explore, questions are not just the work of children, they are essential to the work of early educators…helping us transform our perception of problems into possibilities and create appreciative cultures throughout our profession. In addition to giving examples from her work, Dr. Godwin will also share the emerging global initiative she is a part of through the Cooperrider Center for Appreciative Inquiry at Champlain College to help advance positive education practices from early education on up.

Friday Morning Keynote| October 13, 2017| 8:45am – 9:45am

Mike Lanza, BA,MA, Author of Playborhood: Turn Your Neighborhood Into a Place for Play

Third Places for Kids

A "third place" is the place people visit to socialize with friends. On TV, it was the Cheers bar. For kids of decades ago, it was the place - e.g. a ball field, vacant lot, tree house in the woods - where kids could go pretty much anytime to find other kids to play with. Today, almost no kids have a physical third place, so they resort to frequenting a third place online, such as on Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, or SMS.
This session will describe how adults can create a vibrant physical third place for kids, taking into account the difficulties of doing so in the 21st Century. You'll learn why this is so difficult today, the elements of successful third places for kids, and some successful examples from different communities in the United States.

Saturday Morning Keynote | Saturday, October 14, 2017 | 8:45am – 9:45am

Courtney Waring, BA, MA, Director of Education at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, Amherst Mass

The Whole Book Approach

Discover the difference between reading with children and reading to children. Courtney Waring, Director of Education at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, will present on the Whole Book Approach, a storytime approach developed by former Carle educator Megan Lambert that fosters interactive reading experiences and considers the art and design of picture books. Participants will learn way to evaluate the picture book as an art form and to encourage the critical engagement of students during picture book reading experiences.
