Event description

Description

History of the Area

Your tour this year will take you through one of the most beautiful parts of Albuquerque, filled with large trees, grass and flowers. Los Ranchos de Albuquerque is an area that was first inhabited by Native Americans and later by Spanish colonists. Its rich history is as an agricultural area, along the banks and canals of the Rio Grande. In recent years some of the land has been developed into homesites, but still retains much of its agricultural flavor.

The nine private gardens on the Parade of Gardens are large and diverse, from a 2-acre secluded refuge for birds, bees, butterflies and animals to a tiny gem of a Courtyard garden inspired by Monet’s Garden and created for maximum color by two Artists. There is an Art Show and Sale of the Plein Air Painters works at Garden #4, as well as Artists painting in every garden. Musicians will be in some of the gardens from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Driving Directions

Parade of Gardens Map

The order of the gardens is laid out for a minimum of left-hand turns. If you choose to start at the north end, you can start at #7, but please keep in numerical sequence, as it will make your and everyone else’s day smoother. When you have seen Garden #9 please go down 4th Street to Griegos and proceed to Rio Grande for #1 through 6.

Please note: MONTGOMERY/MONTANO DOES NOT CONNECT TO RIO GRANDE AVENUE. If you are coming from the north, in order to reach Rio Grande to see Garden #1, you will need to cross over on Griegos/Commanche and turn right on Rio Grande. Then just past the Flying Star, turn right on Dietz Road and follow the signs.

Gardens #2, 3, and 4 are located together immediately after crossing the bridge over Montano in the gated community Los Poblanos, which is on the right. You can turn right and park near #4, or you can continue around the loop to park near #3 or #2. From there you can walk to all three in any order you choose. It is about a half-mile walk between all three. Please always drive to the right.

At Garden #5, you can park on both sides of the road, but please park facing east. Your tour will continue east on Green Valley where you will turn right on Guadalupe and then turn right again on Chavez Road. Follow the signs to #6. As you leave #6, please turn right on Alhambra Cir. This is a loop and will bring you back to the entrance of the subdivision, where you will turn right on Chavez and right again on Rio Grande to get to # 7, 8 and 9.
