About Beauty for Freedom and Project Ghana

Beauty for Freedom (BFF), a 501(c)(3) Non-profit foundation, whose mission is to battle the crisis of human trafficking and empower survivors, raises revenue for survivors in the developing world with a fresh approach of self-worth and empowerment through the arts. We engage the industries of Beauty and Fashion as powerful allies in the fight to end human trafficking through youth advocacy education/mentoring programs, public campaigns, our travel-abroad arts therapy workshops for survivors and events.

Beauty for Freedom exists to empower survivors and at-risk youth of trafficking through creative expression and art therapy. We work to bring about community awareness on the issue of human trafficking and engage communities to help improve lives of victims and survivors. We focus on skill development and improving self-esteem for victims/survivors. We work in areas where there are high instances of human trafficking. Additionally, our art and creative therapies provide opportunities for survivors to discover new talents, interests, and strengths while their recovery and reintegration process in underway.

Our program participants create their own artworks. Although their art making journeys are not always pleasant and remind them of their traumatic experiences, they still keep going and complete their art projects successfully and with much passion. This whole process gives them a great sense of joy and pride. They become more confident and motivated. They achieve greater clarity about their interests and goals, learn skills, and achieve a more positive self-image and improved self-esteem.

To sustain and grow their empowerment initiatives through the arts, Beauty for Freedom partnered with Challenging Heights on Project Ghana teaching an art therapy initiative featuring photography, watercolor painting and mural workshops to over 300 youth at the CH Friends International Academy and 58 young survivors of labor trafficking currently housed in the recovery program at the Challenging Heights Hovde House. Beauty for Freedom brought in over 150 lbs of art supplies and professional DSLR camera equipment the youth used to create original artwork in the workshop series from June 24-July 7th, 2017. Beauty for Freedom expands Project Ghana Summer 2018 to include fashion design and merchandising and a music therapy workshop series for young survivors at the Hovde House Rescue Center featuring music production, spoken word and traditional Ghanaian drumming.
