Event Details

Located on Harrisburg Pike in Lancaster, the Transfer Station Complex serves as the central drop-off location for haulers and residents delivering trash, construction/demolition waste and certain recyclable materials. Once delivered, the material is loaded into large transfer trailers and transported to the Lancaster Waste-to-Energy Facility, Frey Farm Landfill or a private recycling facility for final processing and disposal. During the tour, guests will visit the Household Hazardous Waste Facility where materials like paint, electronics and batteries are collected for safe recycling and disposal, compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling stations where LCSWMA transfer trucks and customer fleets fill up and the 40,000 square foot main Transfer Building where waste is delivered by independent hauling customers.

The FREE Transfer Station Complex tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.

Due to limitations of the site and the safety of our guests, children must be at least 8 years of age and accompanied by an adult.

Visitors are required to wear clothing that is appropriate for an industrial environment. Closed-toed shoes are mandatory. Sandals, flip-flops or open toe/open heel shoes are prohibited. For the safety of our guests, any individual not appropriately dressed will be asked to refrain from participating in the tour.

The Transfer Station Complex is located at 1299 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster 17603. Parking for the tour is located in the Transfer Station Complex parking lot. After turning into the complex at the traffic light, head towards the scalehouse; but instead of getting in line with traffic, make a slight left into the parking lot located between the large two-story brick Transfer Station building and the scalehouse.

The Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) manages the municipal solid waste and recyclable materials from Lancaster County, PA homes and businesses, as well as refuse for the City of Harrisburg and surrounding Dauphin County communities. Once the waste is delivered by private haulers, LCSWMA employs a multi-step approach to trash disposal and processing, called an Integrated System. This Integrated System not only saves significant landfill capacity, it also creates clean, renewable energy (electricity).
