Event description
We are celebrating 40 years of 2 Tone music with some of the original names and creators of the great sound.

About this Event

3 Fantastic bands join us for an evening of 2 Tone, Ska and Reggae.

Neville Staple Band, Beat Goes Bang and Roddy Radiation and teh Skabilly Rebels.

NEVILLE STAPLE BAND

Neville Staple, Legendary front man of The Specials, Fun Boy Three and Special Beat, also known as The Original Rude Boy, is credited with changing the face of pop music not only once but twice. His celebrates a super 40-year career in the music business which is well documented and started out from the early days with Ray King, Pete Waterman, The Coventry Automatics and his Jah Baddis Sound System, before taking to the stage with The Specials during the famous ‘Clash’ tour.

Neville states, “I remember the massive reactions to the hit songs like Ghost Town, Too Much Too Young and Gangsters and fans still write to me about my rugged, energetic and fun stage presence. The way we brought ska to the mainstream was by mixing Jamaican music with the English style, which at the time was punk. A lot of young bands are now putting their own spin on ska -some with dance music and some with a rock beat. It’s all good. The music just makes you want to dance. Even when singing about tough times, every-day things or bad things, the beat and the rhythm makes you want to move. I turn all our live shows into a massive party. The crowd love it and sing along to all the tracks!”

Neville’s 2-Tone legacy is huge. 2-Tone fused traditional ska music with punk rock attitude, energy and musical elements. The movement helped to transcend and defuse racial tensions in Thatcher-era Britain. The actual black and white chequered imagery of 2 Tone has become almost as famous as the music itself.

BEAT GOES BANG

Featuring not only one but three of Birmingham’s statesmen of the 2 Tone era, The Beat Goes Bang provide all of the class and style from a time when music mattered.

Everett Morton, the original drummer for The Beat, has brought together some of Birmingham’s most talented artists to reform as The Beat Goes Bang, bringing that classic sound and feeling back to the streets of Birmingham and beyond.

The band also feature former band mate from The Beat and member of both General Public and Dexys Midnight Runners Mickey Billingham along with Neil Deathridge (International Beat) and Jason Ensa, Sean Williams and Theo Hockley

The city of Birmingham has produced many of the greatest British musical exports from a range of styles and The Beat Goes Bang deliver that classic Ska and Reggae sound with a Post-Punk edge.

After performing with The Beat and releasing three albums in the early 80’s, which included a string of hit singles such as ‘Mirror in the Bathroom’, ‘Tears of a Clown’, ‘Ranking Full Stop’ and ‘Too Nice to Talk To’, Everett now has taken it a step further and introduced a brand new incarnation of that feeling and sound with The Beat Goes Bang, where the group are currently working not only on the old stuff but also bringing you some great new songs too.

SKABILLY REBELS

After 32 years of treating audiences to his own Ska-Rockabilly brand of “Radiation” therapy, Roddy Byers is stepping away from the side of the stage as the Specials’ lead guitarist and into the center spotlight as the frontman/guitarist of his newest and best musical endeavor, the SKABILLY REBELS!

Roddy and his Skabilly Rebels are the next phase of an audio formula Byers has been working to perfect since the day he stepped into the recording studio with the Specials back in the 80s – a fusion of the driving rhythm of Ska and the gritty, hard edge of Rockabilly, also known as “Skabilly.” With the Skabilly Rebel’s debut album, BLUES ATTACK!, Byers and his boys Joe Harcourt (2nd guitar), Lee Pratt (drums), Connor O'Connor (bass), and Adrian R Lee(Sax) bring this sound screaming into beautiful reality, spanning a variety of sonic flavors from the cajun-edged “Black Zodiac,” to the breezy-ska of “Desire,” to the roots-rock flow of “Judgement Day,” to the blues anthem “Another Rusty Nail.” The unique vibe behind each Byers-penned original tune is tied together by that Skabilly heart and soul that flows through Byers’ vagabond voice and shredding guitar licks.

Each song’s rocksteady beat, vocal twang, and rocking riff takes the listener on a thrilling adventure of teenage angst, crazy weekends, long-lost love, cheating hearts, sudden death, and a deep longing for that which a simple department store window is holding back. The subject matter in the 16 tracks is diverse enough to leave any and all listeners able to find a piece of themselves in Byers’ lyrics.

Listen to BLUES ATTACK!, and prepare to move your body to the next, best wave of Ska’s evolution…embrace the sound of REBELLION today!
