Event description

Description

This is the first informational meeting for the UF/IFAS Extension Brevard County 4-H Marine Ecology Special Interest Team. This program involves fun, hands-on activities, classroom information, and multiple field trips throughout Brevard County. Through observation, research and real-life interactions, kids will learn to identify over 200 species of vertebrates, invertebrates and plants, and see how they are connected within the marine ecosystem. Some of the meetings will be in classroom settings with instructors and engaging activities. In other meetings, students will “learn by doing” with kayaking, seining, nature walks, touch tanks and aquariums, and turtle walks.

The first meeting is Monday June 26, 2017. Meetings will continue from July through October, and students will be prepared to participate in the 4-H Marine Ecology Event on November 4, 2017. This is a fun-filled day in which students have opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge of the marine and aquatic worlds and meet like-minded youth from various parts of the state. Members of the Marine Ecology SPIN Team will be required to participate in the Marine Ecology Event.

For the Marine Ecology Event, students will be divided into teams of four within three age groups:

Juniors ages 8-10

Intermediates ages 11-13

Seniors ages 14-17

Please join us to explore the wonders of the marine plants and animals here in Brevard County. This is a great opportunity for students to get outside and learn about the marine environment, make new friends and have some fun!

If you have any questions, please contact Betty Walden at betty.walden@ufl.edu or call 321-633-1702.
