This 4 day workshop series will engage teachers in activities around understanding the special needs learner. Introduction/refresher on 1975 PL, 94-142 Education for all Handicapped Children Act which was reauthorized to Individuals with Disabilities Education (IDEA) Act 2004 and now Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) During the Institute, participants will explore the role of the teacher, paraprofessional and parent in the supporting the special needs student. They will also work together to create support plans to enhance instruction for all students, collaborate with colleagues around monitoring student progress and share best practices for running an organized learning environment. Topics include: The 13 IEP Classifications, Continuum of Special Education Service, Least Restrictive Environment, Response to Intervention (RTI), Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Specially Designed Instruction (SDI), Autism overview, the Service delivery models and continuum of services that are aligned to “A Shared Path to Success”, the “Framework for Great Schools”, and Supporting Positive Behavior.
