Event description

Red Sea Safaris is pleased to announce our first-ever liveaboard diving trip!

This expedition will offer 4 days of diving in the wild and remote offshore islands of the Farasan Banks aboard the Dream Island. It is all-inclusive: transportation, boat charter, all meals, tanks/weights, and tips to the crew. This trip is geared towards advanced divers with minimum 50 logged dives. You must have your own gear (BCD, regulator, dive computer, mask, fins, snorkel). If you wish to night dive, you must also provide your own torch(es). For added safety, we highly recommend you bring your own surface marker buoy (SMB).

The basic trip outline is as follows:

  • Depart KAUST ~530pm on Tuesday evening. Sleep on the boat in the marina.

  • Depart marina Wednesday morning ~630am and go search for whale sharks.

  • After whale sharks, start steaming. Do a midday dive and continue offshore. Do an evening/night dive.

  • Thursday - 3 day dives / 1 night dive

  • Friday - 3 day dives / 1 night dive

  • Saturday - morning dive, steam back towards Al Lith, midday dive, steam, search for sharks and then head back to shore. Meet bus around 630pm and drive back to KAUST

1. What is included?
- EVERYTHING EXCEPT DIVING/SNORKELING GEAR, DIVE TORCH(ES), AND SURFACE MARKER BUOYS (SMBs). Transportation from the KAUST Visitor's Center to the resort in Al-Lith and back to KAUST. All meals are included, including dinner on Tuesday night upon arrival at the resort. All fees associated with the boat and the crew are covered.

2. What will the daily schedule be?
-See above

3. Can I come if I'm not a diver?
- Sure, you may still join this trip if you are not a SCUBA diver, but this does not change the price of the ticket. Snorkeling on these remote offshore reefs is still very enjoyable, and you still have the chance to see amazing animals such as sharks, sea turtles, rays, baraccudas, jacks, dolphins, and more.

4. What do I need to bring with me?
- YOU MUST BRING YOUR IQAMA (or passport) and your KAUST ID. You should also bring a swimsuit, a towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and toiletries. Also: diving gear (including dive computer), snorkeling gear, SMB, dive torch(es), battery, some cash for souvenirs.

5. Where do I meet the bus?
- The bus will be departing from the KAUST Visitor's Center at 530pm on Tuesday. You need to arrange your own transportation to the visitor's center located between the security gates at the main entrance at Gate 1. If this poses a major inconvenience for you, please let us know at least 3 days in advance.

6. How are we going to help with research?
- This is largely an exploratory trip to discover the remote reefs of the Farasan Banks. Little is known about these reefs except that they are laregly untouched, at least compared to frequently fished nearshore reefs. Your participation in this trip will help the research team make research goals for the following season. Furthermore, we have the chance to encounter whale sharks on Wednesday morning. Recording information about whether or not the sharks are tagged, gender of the sharks, and exact locations the sharks are encountered are all very useful to the whale shark project. In addition, photos can be used to identify individuals and we are always looking to build up our database. There will be researchers on the trip with you to record this information and tell you more about our projects.

7. What if we don't see whale sharks?
- We sincerely wish we could guarantee sharks, but we can't. Sorry. This trip coincides with the known whale shark season in Al Lith, but it is not guaranteed we will see them. If we do, it is just an added bonus to this special trip offering.

8. What if the weather is bad?
- We also wish we could guarantee good weather (i.e., light winds and smooth seas), but we can't. We will do our best to cope with bad weather and still get diving / snorkeling in, but you will have to accept our best judgement when considering the safety and comfort of all guests. In extreme cases, a trip may be cancelled due to weather. This is a very rare occurrence. If a trip is fully cancelled by Dream Divers, they typically provide a refund for at least the boat, but we cannot give you a refund just because you did not like the weather.

9. Can children come?
- Minors (under 18) must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian both on the boat and in the water. Coast Guard restrictions on boat capacities do not distinguish between adults and children, so there isn't a boat discount for kid. See Question #3 for non-SCUBA diving children.

10. Do you provide seasickness medication?
- Yes, but it may be a good idea to bring some more. It is available from the pharmacy on campus (in Big Tamimi). If you know you get motion sickness, or are worried that you might, it is strongly advised that you consult the pharmacy and take the medication as directed.

11. Can I drive my own car?
- Yes, although this does not result in a discount. Navigating to Al-Lith through Jeddah can be tricky, but we can provide basic directions if needed.
