Portfolio Review Sessions Available
We'll be opening our studio in Brooklyn for portfolio reviews from an art director's perspective on Friday, May 5th 2017. And we’re also offering Skype reviews as well as in-person sessions.
Each session will be a maximum of 20 minutes. Our portfolio reviews are open to all illustrators at all levels including those who are about to graduate, recent graduates or those who are looking to change their career path. We're happy to give you honest feedback about your work and make suggestions for improvement. We'll review samples of your work as well as critique your website.
Portfolio reviews will be conducted by the founder, editor and design director of 3x3 Magazine, Charles Hively. Our studio is located 30-minutes from midtown Manhattan on the G line. You'll receive complete directions once you've signed up.
We happily open our studio to those who wish to have their portfolio reviewed but due to a rash of individuals who schedule appointments but neither call to cancel nor show up we have decided to charge a nominal fee of $20 for our reviews.
What To Bring
- Please bring your portfolio (6–12 pieces of your best work). For Skype interviews please submit 6 individual images, numbered in pdf format. Please send those 2 days prior to the portfolio review.
- Websites and promo materials can also be reviewed if time permits

It is important that you show up for your scheduled appointment. By signing up you authorize us to charge your credit card for the appointment. You must call or email us one week prior to the scheduled date to reschedule your appointment. We do not accept cancellations. Failing to do so means you forfeit the appointment fee. Since we only schedule one portfolio review session a month our spots go quickly and there is a waiting list, so please be professional in your approach to meeting your appointments.
About Charles Hively
Charles began his career as an illustrator, has founded two award-winning advertising agencies and has worked for major international advertising agencies during his illustrious career. As an art director he has commissioned both illustrators and photographers for local, regional and national campaigns. As founder, editor and design director of 3x3 he is constantly engaged with the world of contemporary illustration and, combined with his experience as an art director and creative director, he provides a unique perspective on the field that few can match. He has lectured at important industry events and universities here in the US as well as Canada, the United Kingdom and Germany and has taught senior-level graphic design courses at Parsons School for Design. He provides monthly portfolio reviews in-person and via Skype reaching over 150 illustrators to date. In addition, he holds several webinars a year sharing his experiences and findings. He is also the author of Nuts & Bolts: A Blueprint for a Successful Illustration Career and is currently working on his second book.
