Description

Portfolio Review Sessions Available
We'll be opening our studio in Brooklyn for portfolio reviews from an art director's perspective on Friday, January 20th, 2017. And we’re also offering Skype reviews as well as in-person sessions.

Each session will be a maximum of 20 minutes. Our portfolio reviews are open to all illustrators at all levels including those who are about to graduate, recent graduates or those who are looking to change their career path. We're happy to give you honest feedback about your work and make suggestions for improvement.

Portfolio reviews will be conducted by the founder, editor and design director of 3x3 Magazine, Charles Hively. Our studio is located 30-minutes from midtown Manhattan on the G line. You'll receive complete directions once you've signed up.

We happily open our studio to those who wish to have their portfolio reviewed but due to a rash of individuals who schedule appointments but neither call to cancel nor show up we have decided to charge a nominal fee of $20 for our reviews.

What To Bring

  • Please bring your portfolio (6–12 pieces of your best work). For Skype interviews please submit 6 individual images, numbered in pdf format. Please send those 2 days prior to the portfolio review.
  • Websites and promo materials can also be reviewed if time permits

Recent Comments
We completed a survey of recent attendees, below are a few of their verbatim comments:

“Charles was frank and to the point in his feedback about my work, and I found it extremely insightful. Charles also took the time to graciously answer all of my questions long after the next person was scheduled to come in.”

“I got excellent feedback that I have kept in mind ever since the review.”

“Charles Hively gave a very helpful feedback and he continued to guide me which pieces work and which one doesn't work. I really appreciate his time especially since he doesn't charge a fee for portfolio review.”

“My experience was very pleasant. The portfolio review centered around the weak points of my style and how to strengthen it. I hindsight, I can say that it has helped me stir my career in a better direction.”

“I believe the portfolio review that I received was fair and honest. I also believe I have grown as an artist because of the review and have sense been more aware of the artist choices I make.”

“Discussion was very insightful. Charles was brutally honest which is always hard to hear but it was much easier to digest in a portfolio review setting when a potential job is NOT on the line-since he's an uninvolved third party, talking can be more honest without having to worry about business relationships. Talking to artists is difficult sometimes because you only have their one career's perspective, talking to Charles was advantageous because he has seen the progression/evolution of many different artists over the years.”

“I felt that an honest portfolio critique was given along with specific actionable suggestions for furthering my career.”

“I felt very motivated after the review, and for me that's the most important thing. I appreciated the critics as much as the nice things that were said about my work. I learned how to present a portfolio in a more professional way. The atmosphere was very relaxed and encouraging. It made me super motivated to go on.”
