On behalf of the Program Committee, we warmly welcome you to the 3rd International Nursing Symposium on 6 July 2019 at the Philippine Consulate in Sydney.

The symposium theme, "2020 - International Year of the Nurse and Midwife: Impact on Nurses' Future Work ", has been carefully chosen to mark such a milestone of our profession.

Recently, the WHO Director-General has designated the year 2020 as the "Year of the Nurse and Midwife" in honour of the 200th birth of Florence Nightingale. The International Council of Nurses suppors the endorsement by the WHO. It will be a time for acknowledging and celebrating the work of the nurses consisiting of 50% of the healthcare workfoce in many countries. But what does this truly mean to nruses in the future? How can the nursing profession continue to raise the profile amongst other health professionals? What strategies can the nursing profession do to overcome the nursing shortage, the aging population, increasing complexity of diseases and treatments, rapid advances in technology, the shifting societal expectations, the funding challenges faced by the health services?

In this symposium, Prof. Lopez will present her thoughts about how the nursing profession has progressed throughout the years and what can be done to address the future of nursing to meet these challenges.

About Prof. Violeta Lopez

Professor Violeta Lopez, RN, MNA, MPET, PhD, FACN has extensive clinical experience and an academic and researcher. She is a Professor and Chutian Scholar at the College of Nursing, Hubei University of Medicine, Shiyan, Hubei Province, .P.R. China. Her previous appointments were at Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, National University of Singapore, Medical School, National Australian University, Australian Catholic University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, University of Sydney, University Science Malaysia, and Jordan Applied Science University. She is an International Editorial Board member of Research in Nursing and Health and Associate Editor of Journal of the European Journal of Oncology Nursing and Journal of Transcultural Nursing. She is also a Board of Director of the World Federation of Critical Care Nursing and invited research grant reviewer for SingHealth Foundations, Health and Medical Research Fund (Hong Kong), Ministry of Health Services Research (Singapore) and National Health Medical and Research Council (Australia). She was recently inducted as a Transcultural Nursing Scholar in 2017 and an inducted to the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame in 2018 (the first Filipino nurse to receive such an accolade). Aside from her scholarly education and research work, Professor Lopez continues to pursue her community service in underdeveloped and developing countries.
