The 3rd Annual Virginia Public Safety Dive Conference

Welcome to the Third Annual Virginia Public Safety Dive Conference.

Our profession is continuously faced with numerous challenges: fiscal constraints, evolving and sometimes disparate standards and policies, not to mention the equipment issues. We all experience these challenges while trying to maintain proficiency levels for rotating and fluctuating staffing on our teams. This conference is designed to assist you in managing these challenges by providing a platform to share best practices, lessons learned and new cutting edge technology.

Please note:

  • Registration is required for the Conference.

  • It is imperative that you register for EITHER the Wednesday OR Thursday pool session, if you intend on participating in a pool session. Space is limited.

There are two concurrent pre-conference sessions:

  • Dive Medic Awareness is an 8 hour class designed for those without medical certifications or with minimal medical experience, but still want to know how to identify, assist and operate at a diving emergency
  • Evidence Recovery (a certification course) - $264.74 student - Focuses on advanced evidence collecting techniques that includes packaging and evidence handling, electrolysis and figerprint development. Students will learn to develop fingerprints from a wide variety of materials. This course does include in-water work. For addtional info see: https://www.ucidiver.com/. THE CLASS MUST MEET A MINIMUM OF 8 STUDENTS - Therefore please email rlemonde@portofvirginia.com if you can committ to attending. If we reach the minimum threshold, we will release the tickets.

The Conference Agenda (registrants will be sent a welcome packet):

Monday: Pre-Conference

Tuesday*: Openining Ceremony and -

  1. Reduction of Risk Through Surface Supplied Air Diving
  2. Underwater Entanglements
  3. Vehicles and Water Calls
  4. Case Studies

Wednesday** and Thursday:

  1. Critical Incident Stress Management/ Peer Support
  2. Vendor Interaction
  3. VOSHA and OSHA
  4. Full Face Mask Diving
  5. Diver Safety on the Dive Site
  6. Safety Roundtable
  7. Pool Sessions

*Dive Medic Operations will run concurrently Tuesday and Wednesday: Dive Medic Operations is a 16 hour class designed for those with medical certitications and could be asked to respond to a diving emergency. This class will cover various topics including command and control, recognizing a dive emergency, operating at the scene and conducting a proper neuro exam on a diver. Dive Medic Awareness and Dive Medic Operations re not intended to be taken together or back to back, rather attendance should be based on your level of training. Police, FF and those with minimal medical experience in Awareness and EMTs, Intermediates and Paramedics in Operations.

**Wednesday will include a breakout session for Command and Agency Leadership

Thursday evening: Social Hour(s) at Bull Island Brewing Company

Friday: Discussion Panel and Closing Ceremony
