Not just a walk/run, a step forward.
Whether you are a regular runner or a first time 5k walker, join the Share The Love 5k the day before Valentine's Day 2017 to support the Brownsville Wellness Coalition and its programs.
SHARE THE LOVE: We are challenging Brownsville to share the love with family, friends, and other loved ones this Valentine's Day weekend. Your participation will support initiatives like the Brownsville Farmers' Market, Community Gardens, and more, making Brownsville a healthier community for all.
WHEN IS IT? The event will take place on Saturday, February 11, 2017. We recommend arriving early to find parking in the surrounding areas of Linear Park. Arrive at least 45 minutes before your start time to be chipped (chip timing) so we can record your run/walk time. The 5k will begin at 8:00am. The 1 Mile Cupid's Run begins at 8:30am. Stay after the event to shop the Brownsville Farmers' Market.
WHERE IS IT? The 5k/1Mile run/walk will start and finish at the Brownsville Farmers' Market in Linear Park across from the Gladys Porter Zoo.
HOW FAR IS A 5K? A 5k is 3.1 Miles.
WHAT IS CHIP TIMING? Chip Timing is an electronic way to time your walk/run. Participants wear a small chip that records their time as they cross designated timing mats at the finish line. This information is fed into our laptops and race software so that we can produce accurate and fast results so that you can gauge your walk/run progress. When you see everyone heading to the start line, follow them. Runners/Walkers are supposed to line up according to how they think they will finish - faster runners in the front, joggers in the middle, walkers behind the runners. This prevents congestion on the route.
WILL THERE BE AWARDS? BWC prefers to think of this as a community event, not a race. We want walkers and runners of all levels. There are awards for top overall finishers, female and male, as well as a team participation winners. You must be present to receive your award. Awards will NOT be mailed.
- 5k: top male
- 5k: top female
- 1m: top male
- 1m: top female
- team participation
- school team participation
SHOULD I REGISTER AS AN INDIVIDUAL OR AS A TEAM? We want you to encourage as many of your loved ones to take that step to get involved. You don't even have to run/walk together or enter the same event (5k vs. 1m). Have a team captain register a team when they complete their registration, pick a groovy custom team name, then have your loved ones register under that same team name. You might just win the team participation trophy!
WHAT DO I GET WITH MY REGISTRATION? Whether you walk/run the 5k or the 1mile, each participant registered before Monday, February 6, 2017 will receive a custom event t-shirt, a finish medal, goodies from the Farmers' Market and more! Don't forget: keep your bib number on after you walk/run to be entered to win raffle prizes. Must be present to win. A carnation to the first 500 5k finishers.
WHEN AND WHERE IS PACKET PICK-UP? Packet pick-up for registrants will be held on Thursday, February 9th from 3:00pm-7:00pm at TBA in Brownsville. Please bring your photo ID. Event Packets will NOT be mailed to you! You will be emailed about 10 days prior to the event with information on dates and locations for the Packet Pick-up. Don't forget: keep your bib number on after you walk/run to be entered to win raffle prizes. Must be present to win.
- Can someone else pick up my race packet for me? Yes, someone else may request your packet. This person will need to present your confirmation email or a copy of your photo ID.
- Is this your first packet pick up? GREAT! Packet pick-up is where all participants must "check in" and pick up their packet. The packet will include your bib number (the number you will need to pin to your shirt for the walk/run), sponsor and event information, your t-shirt, and other goodies. Your photo ID is required at packet pick-up.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? This is a rain or shine event, please dress accordingly. We recommend coming in layers, wearing sun screen, and dressing to the Valentine's Day theme. We will have volunteers passing out prizes for our best theme-dressed participants.
